13. The National World War II Memorial

The National World War II Memorial opened in 2004. It was dedicated to the sixteen million Americans who fought in World War II, and to the millions of Americans that supported the war effort on the Home Front.

The Memorial is divided into two parts. The Atlantic end of the monument focuses on those who fought in Europe and North Africa to stop Hitler, while the Pacific end of the monument is dedicated to the armed forces that fought against Imperial Japan.

States and territories are represented by the columns in the memorial. In addition, the World War II memorial includes 24 bronze bas relief panels, portraying the varied experiences of Americans during the war.
