The floating memorial was built in 1962. It is “Dedicated to the eternal memory of our gallant shipmates in the USS Arizona who gave their lives in action 7 December, 1941.”
Visitors take a small boat to the memorial. Once inside, the Assembly Room overlooks the sunken hull of the USS Arizona. Parts of the original ship can be seen above the water, while the hull of the ship is underwater. You can observe an oil slick on the water’s surface. These oil remnants are called the “tears of the USS Arizona.”
The next room is the Shrine, which contains the names of 1,012 sailors and Marines who perished when the USS Arizona was sunk during the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
