Jamie took me to kayak on Elk Horn Slough at Moss Landing, just a half hour south of Santa Cruz on Highway 1.
She promised sea otters, and boy did she deliver. We saw dozens of them: eating, playing, swimming and lounging in the slough. Look closely at otter4 and otter5photos and you’ll see a parent with a pup.
And bonus, the brown pelicans were putting on a show, flying in formation over the water and preening themselves on the shore. We were told these endangered birds visit the slough annually.
Along with the main attractions, we saw sea lions and cormorants, too. And we would highly recommend the nearby restaurant with great sea food and beer. It was a perfect afternoon!
