The Hayward Shoreline was a nice surprise, not the place I expected to see beautiful white egrets and lush bay marshland. Hidden behind small factories and chain link fences, a graveled trail stretches five miles along the Bay. As Tim and I walked, we saw lots of shorebirds. Protruding from the mud flats were timbers, remnants of the landing sites for vessels that carried people, salt, and agricultural products from Hayward to San Francisco as early as the 1850’s. I won’t miss my daily Hayward commute down Mission Avenue, but in retirement I’ll look forward to an occassional Hayward shoreline stroll. Who knew?
