When I was growing up, I’d pedal my bike from 75 Mirabel up to Four Corners and then down to Muir Woods. It was a three mile ride. The beautiful big trees had fewer visitors then, and I had no idea how lucky I was. The Muir Woods redwoods were simply our neighbors.
In recent years, I’ve enjoyed hiking in the back door of the national monument to avoid packed parking lots. I leave the car near the Mountain Home Inn on Panoramic Highway. I amble down the canyon on several lovely trails. Their names are fitting: The Canopy View Trail, The Lost Trail, Fern Creek Trail and the Redwood Creek Trail.
Recently, I took my camera and lunch. In addition to the creek and trees, it’s fun to see people from all over the world enjoying the magnificence of our old growth redwoods for the first time.
In the afternoon, I exited the park via Alice Eastwood, walking up the Camp Eastwood Road. No matter how many times I visit Muir Woods, the towering trees never disappoint.
