We visited the cousins of our coastal redwoods in Sequoia National Park, located in the southern Sierra. We drove up the scenic and winding Generals Highway. Our first stop was the largest tree in the world, the General Sherman Tree. It was massive - measuring 31 meters around and soaring 275 feet tall. As we learned, the Hyperion - a coastal redwood - is still the tallest tree in the world at 360 feet.
We hiked along the snow covered Congress Trail, leaving the crowds behind. It was a magical three mile loop among the towering Sequoia giants. We found lunch at the nearby Wuksachi Lodge, with beautiful views of snow covered peaks. Late in the afternoon, we drove back down the mountain with gorgeous panoramic vistas. The Sequoias may be the “other redwoods” for us, but these spectacular trees are not to be missed.
