The Dunn Trail in the Oakland hills begins where Joaquin Miller Road meets Skyline Blvd. I call it the “Up and Down” trail because the three-mile loop climbs and falls several times.
The loop I walk is really a three mile loop of three different trails: the Dunn Trail, Monteiro Trail, and the Golden Spike Trail.
It has a little bit of everything for a hiker. The warmer part of the walk includes oaks and manzanitas. The cooler canyons are shaded by curved bay trees and towering redwoods. In spring the trail is dotted with wildflowers, especially lupine and poppies. And bonus, it gets less traffic than the flatter and easier nearby Sequoia- Bay View Trail.
