15. The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial

 
 

Your final stop at the National Mall is the newest memorial dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  The memorial was opened on August 28th, 2011, exactly 48 years after the 1963 March on Washington. It was at this march that King gave his most famous speech, “I have a dream...” from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

The memorial includes a giant stature of King emerging out of a mountain of granite. Inscribed on the memorial are his famous words, “ Out of a mountain of despair, a stone of hope.”

Throughout the memorial are inscriptions are other famous words from King speeches, all of which emphasize his dedication to civil and human rights for all Americans and his philosophy of  non-violence and love.
