6. The Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial

 
 

This Presidential memorial is dedicated to Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Located in west Potomac Park, it includes four open air rooms made of rough granite blocks. The four rooms symbolize the four terms that President Roosevelt, who guided our nation through the Great Depression and World War II.

"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself, “is inscribed on a granite block, along with other famous quotations from Roosevelt's speeches.  The memorial  has a sculpture of a person listening to the President’s  “fireside chats,” Roosevelt’s regular radio address to the American people. The memorial also includes life size statues of a poor Appalachian couple, the unemployed standing in a bread line,  and Roosevelt’s wife Eleanor.

One of the most unique parts of the memorial is the Social Programs mural, depicting fifty four government agencies started during Roosevelt's New Deal.
