The Cold War was the competition and tension between the United States and the Soviet Union after World War II. It began with the division of Europe, described by Churchill as the "Iron Curtain." Beginning with Harry Truman the United States worked to contain the spread of communism. In some cases the US avoided war, as we did with the Berlin Airlift in 1948 and the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, and in others the US fought communists in hot wars, as in Korea and Vietnam. In 1989 the Berlin Wall fell, as did the hold of communism in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. The Cold War was over.
