For much of human history people were ruled by kings and queens. The emergence of democracy, rule by the people, has its origins in the first experiments in the Greek city-states and the Roman Republic. Respect for laws and individual rights was spread by the great monotheistic religions. The democratic impulse was fueled by the Enlightenment ideas and revolutions in England, the US, and France. The Enlightenment ideals spread in the 19th century throughout Latin America and eventually around the world.
