The introductory unit of the AP Gov course focuses on the foundations of American democracy. We begin by defining and exploring types of governments. Our emphasis in this unit is on the role the Founders played in writing the Constitution and creating a national government to replace the weak Articles of Confederation. Finally, we look at federalism, the division of power between the national government and the states.
