The House Where I Used to Live

I walked away from it today

turned the key

and locked the door

for the last time

turned around

and looked behind

at the house

where I used to live

I’m sure somewhere down the road

I’ll be a stranger driving by

peeking in the windows

working up the courage

to knock

and just say “”Hi,

This is the house

where I Used to live”

This used to be my room

Down this hall

and to the right

I’d lie and listen

to the trains

running through

the night

In this house

where I used to live

Out that gate and down the block

we skinned our knees

and played tag

an just bare feet

broke some bones

right down that street

behind this house

where I used to live

But, now the rooms have all been changed

and  so many walls are gone

nothing looks the same

all I can do

is walk away

for the last time

from the house

where I used to live

where I used to live
